Badminton, which originated in India, is one of the oldest racquet sports in the world. Its name probably derives from “badminton house”, a property in Gloucestershire, England, where the game was first played in the mid-19th century. It quickly gained popularity in England and became a competitive sport, with the first official competition taking place in 1873. In 1934, the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation) was founded to govern the sport at the international level. Since then, badminton has become an Olympic sport, making its debut at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and is now played by millions of people around the world.
A total of 172 badminton players, divided equally between men and women, will compete in five medal events. Qualification for the games involves 172 quota places, divided equally between genres. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter a maximum of eight players in five events, with France, as the host country, reserving a place in each singles event. Other players qualify through the “Race to Paris” ranking list, with a qualification period from May 1, 2023 to April 28, 2024.
