Table tennis, which originated as an informal meeting of English high society, evolved in the early 20th century into a modern sport. The first competitions were held in 1926 in Berlin and London, marking the beginning of the World Table Tennis Championships. Since then, the sport has spread around the world, becoming particularly popular in Asia, especially in China, where it has more than 40 million licensed players, making table tennis the most played sport in the world.
Table tennis is played on a table divided by a net, with rackets with specific properties. Singles matches are played in four winning sets, while team matches include four singles matches and one doubles match, all played in a best-of-five format. Introduced to the Olympic Games in 1988, table tennis has been largely dominated by China ever since, winning the majority of the gold medals up for grabs.
